History Novigrad - Historical and Cultural Information about Novigrad
The area of today's Novigrad was inhabitated already in antique times, about what witnesses many monuments and archaeological sites. In written documents Novigrad is mentioned as Neapolis in 7th and in 9th century as Civitas Nova, and in 12th century in church's sources as Emona, Emonia and Aemonia. As the ancient seat of the diocese (from 5th/6th century up to 1831) Novigrad's bishops had jurisdiction over the territory that stretched to the north to the river Dragonja, and to the south-east to the river Mirna.

Novigrad, due to its position on a small peninsula, and because of its fertile natural hinterland, was often at the intersection of rich historical events. Its Renaissance city saw from the 8th to 9th century when the seat of Frank Prince Ivan became the starting point of pervaded feudalizm what included it in the stage of European culture. Due to the frequent wars and infectious diseases, the city experienced in the 16th-17th century its stagnation.
